Tribute To The Late ‘Deadliest Catch’ Captain

February 18th, 2010 - 9:02 pm ICT by Angela Kaye Mason

deadFeb 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Phil Harris, well-known captain of the Cornelia Marie died of complications following a stroke at the age of 53 years old. While off loading the boat at a port in St Paul Island, Alaska, on January 29, he suffered a stroke and was taken to Anchorage Hospital. He died on February 9th.

The Discovery Channel had this to say “He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil’s every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil’s sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.”

The Discovery Channel will be airing a 15 hour marathon beginning February 21 at 12 pm, featuring the greatest moments of Phil Harris, sea captain, and accidental star.

Harris was apparently a superstitious man, as many sea-goers are. Recently he spoke of some of his superstitions that he did not ever break. “”I don’t leave on a Friday, ever,” he said, “because the last two times I did I blew up the main engine. So I just don’t do it.” He stuck to that, even in death. Harris suffered his stroke while unloading his boat, on Friday,(Jan 29) but refused to leave, until a Tuesday.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, crew, friends, and fans. May God bring peace and comfort to you in this sad time.
