Travolta joins Washington in ‘The Taking of Pelham 123′ remake

Tony Scott helms the new Columbia Pictures’ movie.

Travolta will play the leader of a quartet that hijacks a Gotham subway train and threatens to kill the passengers unless a ransom is paid.

Travolta’s role was essayed by Robert Shaw in the original 1974 movie.

Washington plays the chief detective of security for the subway, a role originated by Walter Matthau in the Joseph Sargent-directed drama, reports Variety.

Screenplay for the pic has been penned by David Koepp.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing through Escape Artists, along with Tony Scott through his Scott Free banner.

The film rolls into production early next year.

‘Pelham’ will also mark Travolta’s return to action movies. The thesp was most recently seen on the big screen as Edna Turnblad in “Hairspray”.

He last played an action hero in “The Punisher” in 2004. (ANI)
