With a blended family of mixed traditions the celebration of Christmas has a different meaning to all. Gloria and her son Manny celebrate with fireworks and harmless jokes. Jay her husband isn’t aware of the Columbia traditions of Christmas and feels when in America celebrate the American way. It doesn’t take long for Jay to see that adding a few fireworks on Christmas doesn’t take away from the American traditional celebrations of Santa and opening your new pajamas on Christmas Eve. Besides it makes his wife Gloria and her son Manny happy and that means more to Jay.
Claire discovers the day before Christmas that her couch has a burn hole in it. Questioning her kids she becomes extremely upset when no one confesses to admitting to burring the couch with a cigarette. Phil decides there will be no Christmas until someone confesses to the damage on the couch. With no confessions and Christmas becoming closer, Alex has a plan to get Christmas back on track. She tells her brother Luke and sister Haley that if they all confess their parents will be so touched by their love and protection of one another that they will forgive and forget. In the process of the confession only Luke takes the blame, leaving Claire and Phil still asking her burned the couch. Christmas is still off until the truth is heard. Alex finally admits it was her and takes the fall nod the punishment, Christmas is back on. While the family is gathered in the living room opening their gifts, Claire sees that the couch is smoking, realizing an ornament on the tree with the sun reflecting through it actually is what caused the burn. Claire apologizes to her family and to Alex for doubting her. At the end of the show the whole family is celebrating Christmas around the dining room table eating a traditional American Christmas dinner along with some Colombian treats. A blended American Modern Family celebrating the Holidays and loving each other along the way.
