London, Oct 29 (ANI): The entire cast of 1965 movie ‘The Sound Of Music’, reunited for the first time to mark the 45th anniversary of the classic film musical.
Dame Julie Andrews, 75, and Christopher Plummer, 80, joined the movie’s grown-up Von Trapp children for a reunion on The Oprah Winfrey show.
The actors recalled their memories of making the movie, which won five Oscars.
All seven of the grown-up Von Trapp children, Charmian Carr (Liesl), Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Heather Menzies (Louisa), Duane Chase (Kurt), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Debbie Turner (Marta) and Kym Karath (Gretl) joined Winfrey on her famous sofa, reports the Daily Mail.
During the interview, Dame Julie recalls singing The Hills Are Alive on the mountain while trying to stop the downdraft from the helicopter flying around her from knocking her over.
She also ended up accidentally falling backwards into the lake during the boat scene when she tried to catch seven-year-old Karath, who couldn’t swim.
Menzies, 60, who played the second oldest daughter Louisa, admitted she tried to shake off her clean-cut image by posing in nude in Playboy in the Seventies, but told Oprah: “It didn’t work.”
Carr, 67, best known for playing the eldest Von Trapp child Liesl, was 21 at the time of filming and admitted she had a crush of Plummer, dubbing him “so perfect”.
Even though the 1965 blockbuster is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, its stars said 20th Century Fox feared it would be a huge flop after early critics said it was laced with too much cloying sweetness.
And although Plummer, 80, admitted he had been cruel about the movie in the past, he softened his line for the new interview: “There needed to be a cynic of some kind around to stop it from getting too mawkish,” he said.
Even British export Dame Julie, 75, agreed: “I think we all felt that if we weren’t careful, the film could have been dreadfully saccharin.”
It’s the first time in decades that Plummer, who played Captain Von Trapp, has spoken about the movie.
Although it is the role for which he is best remembered, he has often referred to the film as ‘The Sound Of Mucus’ and refused to take part in previous reunions.
Plummer said he had now ‘made peace’ with the film, adding: “It’s not my cup of tea, that’s all, and somebody had to be cynical. Of course I don’t loathe it. It’s a really good movie of its kind. I think it’s Julie’s best picture - she’s wonderful in it.”
Speaking about the reunion, he said: “Oprah got all the kids, who had grown into decrepit old people, and it was all rather sweet. I found myself thinking it was quite a warm and wonderful experience.” (ANI)
