London, Feb 27 (IANS) Animated series “The Simpsons” is set to become the longest running prime time show in US television history after two more seasons were announced.
Currently in its 20th season, the cartoon has matched the record of cowboy drama “Gunsmoke” and will surpass it when its 21st season begins in the autumn, reports contactmusic.com.

Aired on Fox since 1989, the channel has also ordered a 22nd season, which will take the total number of episodes to 493 for the animated series.

“The popularity of the show all over the world continues and it is gratifying and the show’s still fun to do. It’s a totally entertaining experience from my point of view,” said creator Matt Groening.

The show, which tells of the exploits of the Simpson family comprising Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson, as well as those of their friends and neighbours has won 24 Emmys in its 20 years on air.

It also has to its credit the coveted title of the longest running animated series on prime time TV. A full-length feature film called “The Simpsons Movie” in 2007 raked in more than $527 million worldwide.
