`The Revenant’ will be Mexican director’s next project
August 19th, 2011 - 12:09 pm ICT by IANSLos Angeles, Aug 19 (IANS/EFE) Warner Bros. has chosen Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu to direct a 19th-century western titled “The Revenant”, the filmmaker’s first project since the critically acclaimed “Biutiful”, Variety magazine reported on its web site.
The film, to be produced by Anonymous Content, will be based on the 2004 novel “The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge” by Michael Punke. The screenplay was written by Mark L. Smith.
The story is set in 1823 and centers around a fur trapper who is mauled by a grizzly bear and robbed by the two men accompanying him.
Despite suffering severe injuries, the trapper survives and recovers and then undertakes a 5,000-km (3,100-mile) trek in search of revenge.
The film will be Inarritu’s fifth after “Amores Perros”, “21 Grams”, “Babel” and “Biutiful”. The Mexican filmmaker is the first from his country to be nominated for a best director Oscar (”Babel”).
“Biutiful” was nominated this year for a best foreign film Oscar, while “Amores Perros” and “Babel” had also received Oscar nods in that same category in previous years.
