“The Hurt Locker” producer banned from Sunday’s Academy Awards over e-mails to Academy voters

Nicolas Chartier BEVERLY HILLS (BNO NEWS) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday said it has denied attendance to the 82nd Academy Awards for one of the producers of “The Hurt Locker,” one of the nominees of the Best Picture award.

Nicolas Chartier was denied attendance as a penalty for violating Academy campaigning standards. The organization alleges that Chartier recently disseminated an email to a number of Academy voters and other film industry figures in which he solicited votes for “The Hurt Locker,” and disparaged one of the other contending films.

The executive committee of the Academy’s Producers Branch ruled late Monday, during a special session, that the “ethical lapse” merited the revocation of Chartier’s invitation to the Awards. According to Academy rules, it is prohibited to cast a “negative or derogatory light” on a competing film.

The Branch, during the session, stopped short of recommending that the Academy governors rescind Chartier’s nomination. If “The Hurt Locker” wins the Best Picture award, Chartier will receive his Oscar statuette at some point subsequent to Sunday’s ceremonies.

The other three producers, Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal and Greg Shapiro will still be able to attend the ceremonies, as they were not involved in the emails.

“The Hurt Locker” was among nine other movies to be nominated as “Best Picture.” Other nominations for the movie include “Actor in a Leading Role,” “Cinematography,” “Directing” and “Film Editing.”
