woodyNov. 26, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Nov. 28 will see the staging of a moving tribute to the American folk legend Woody Guthrie. The event will be hosted by the current members of the family, including Arlo Guthrie, his son Abe Guthrie, Sarah Lee Guthrie and her husband Johnny Irion. The show will be held at Carnegie Hall in New York. The family members will be performing new songs by Eliza Gilkyson, Billy Bragg and others. The showstealer will definitely be the rendition of some of Woody’s unpublished lyrics.

Woody Guthrie is best remembered for his patriotic “This Land Is My Land” that made it to most of the American schools and beyond. It is sung in the schools to this day. He is considered to be one of the pioneers of American folk music. This Thanksgiving in America seems to be dedicated to him, with shows being hosted in various parts of the country in his memory. Other than the one organized by his own family, there is a food festival that will take place in the Guthrie Center in Van Deusenville Road. The festival, organized by the Samel’s Deli and Savory Harvest Catering will consist of a free Thanksgiving dinner, complete with a turkey.

On a far larger and grander scale, Stage 3 Theater will play host to “Woody Guthrie’s American Song.” The cast remains almost the same from it’s original production and promises to be even better. All the cast members play their own instruments and are talented and well known musicians in their field. The play will contain 25 songs from Woody’s vast repertoire.
