London, May 19 (ANI): English film director Stephen Frears has admitted that he had no idea who actress Gemma Arterton was and had asked her to audition for the starring role in ‘Tamara Drewe’ like everybody else.

Arterton, 24, who plays the lead role in Frears’ comedy about a former ugly duckling turned sex kitten who moves into a sleepy Dorset village, had critics raving about her “smouldering” performance.

But Frears, 68, whose credits include ‘The Queen’, ‘High Fidelity’ and ‘My Beautiful Launderette’, was clueless about the former Bond girl’s credentials.

“I hadn’t heard of Gemma Arterton, who’ll be upset to read that,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“But she came to see me and she sat down beside me and I said to my casting director, ‘Is she any good? Because if she is - book her’.

“It was there to see. She was clearly gorgeous, warm and witty and likeable,” he added. (ANI)
