Susan Sarandon slammed for calling the Pope as a ‘Nazi’
October 18th, 2011 - 8:06 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, Oct 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US Catholic has slammed Susan Sarandon for calling the pope a Nazi. The actress made the comment about Pope Benedict XVI during a chat at the Hamptons International Film Festival over the weekend.
In her conversation with Bob Balaban last Saturday, Sarandon remarked that she gave the pope a copy of the book “Dead Man Walking.” She clarified herself saying she meant Pope John Paul II and not “this Nazi one we have now.”
The comments have drawn sharp criticism from the Anti-Defamation League and the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights.
In a statement which was released on Monday, the National Director of ADL, Abraham H. Foxman, chastised the actress saying that, “Ms. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies…Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust.”
Foxman further advised the actress to apologize for the comments that she made. The Catholic League called the action of Sarandon as “positively obscene” stating that the actress is ignorant. The president of the organization bluntly told E! News that “it is very hard to find someone dumber.”
Pope Benedict is a German and was born John Ratzinger.
