September 19, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Susan Boyle achieved her dream when she found herself singing for Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday. The event took place at the open air mass which was celebrated at the Bellahouston Park, Glasgow.
Boyle at 49 is one of the most unlikely pop stars to have made it. She found herself catapulted to fame and becoming an Internet star of sorts after winning the television show, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. While Boyle is used to singing in the churches which formed a part of her routine performances before she achieved the fame, singing for His Holiness, the Pope himself is quite another matter altogether, she feels.
She started by reprising to her winning song, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ from ‘Les Miserables’. She was also a part of the 800 people forming the choir who sang the hymns, ‘Make Me a Channel of Your Peace’ and ‘How Great Thou Art’. Her lilting voice received a standing ovation from the 60,000 strong crowd. She was suitably attired in a long black coat and sensible heels in accordance with the sobriety of the occasion.
The Scotland born Susan Boyle said that she felt honored to be able to sing for the Pope reiterating that it had been her dream. This formed a part of her pre mass statement.
The open air mass was part of the first day celebrations to mark the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. He is currently on a four day visit to Britain and will also be meeting Queen Elizabeth II at the Holyroodhouse Palace, located in Edinburgh.
