‘Survivor’ Richard Hatch jailed
May 3rd, 2011 - 7:37 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBrooklyn, May 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Richard Hatch is now inmate 05559-070 at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. The star of the first ‘Survivor’ show is set to stay behind bars for 9 months, with his release slated for December 12, 2011. Hatch is being held on federal tax evasion charges. He made had made an appeal to the public to help him pay of his debts, but apparently his plea fell on deaf years.
The reality star, dubbed ‘the fat naked guy’ by David Letterman, received US $ 1,000,000 when he won the CBS show, as well as a Pontiac Aztec car. He signed papers from CBS, stating that he understood that he would have to pay the taxes on his winnings. These words apparently escaped his attention, and he served three years behind bars for tax evasion. He claimed he’d forgotten to mention his income to his accountant, including earnings from a radio show stint and rent from a property he owned. There were also charges dealing with the misappropriation of funds destined for a charity Hatch founded for troubled youth, called Horizon Bound. Donations to this organization were deposited in the reality star’s personal checking account. A spate of other charges were also heard, dealing with forgery, perjury and mail fraud.
The ‘Survivor’ winner, dubbed a ’snake’ by a fellow contestant, seems not to have learned his lesson. Hatch neglected to pay back what he owed the government, amounting to $2,000,000 in back taxes, fines and penalties. He finally turned himself into police custody, checking into the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York on April 29th.
