Sue GraftonThe ‘chick lit’ onslaught in the market has dried up but there was a point of time when it was found in every possible nook and corner of the market. Some may say that the term ‘chick lit’ is dead but still it still remains somewhere breathing amongst us. It could be there in any form. It can be there in a form of ‘romantic comedy’ or ‘contemporary woman’s fiction with a tinge of humor’.

Before the commencement of the term ‘chick lit’, renowned author Sue Grafton came out with her Alphabet series. Sue who had been writing articles since she was 18 is known mostly for her novels dealing with mystery. Her protagonist, Kinsey Mihone though not possessing the ingredients of a typical ‘chick’ had the components of what made her as the ‘chick lit’. Kinsey was single, sassy and smart. The books follows the ‘alphabetical order’ such as ‘A Is For Alibi’, ‘B Is for burglar’ and so on.

This approach of Sue’s work was a trend setter for many. The detective and the female protagonist of her book Kinsey Mihone has been featured all through out the series the last one being ‘Z Is For Zero’.
These books has appealed to many, especially the fairer sex. The presence of a female protagonist uplifted the sales as women would find all the components of a ‘lady” in the character resulting them to somewhat relate with the book. Sue Grafton’s work probably had the fragrance of a ‘chick’ who isn’t sloppy or slurry. Sue’s work portrayed the character of a woman who unveils all the mysteries in life.
