Spike Lee speaks against Tyler Perry

New York City, Oct 27 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Moviemaker Spike Lee has picked a new tiff with acclaimed actor/director Tyler Perry after he said that the star’s hit films are a step backwards for African-Americans.
Director Spike Lee has accused Tyler Perry of “coonery and buffoonery” in his films. These comments by him have upset Perry. In a taped interview for U.S. news show 60 Minutes, Perry says, “That p**ses me off. It really does - because it’s so insulting.”
“It’s attitudes like that that make Hollywood think that these people (his characters) do not exist and that’s why there’s no material speaking to them, speaking to us. I would love to read that to my fan base.”
Spike Lee said, ‘I think there’s a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery. I see ads for ‘Meet the Browns’ and ‘House of Payne’ and I’m scratching my head.” Lee adds,” We’ve got a black president and we’re going back. The image is troubling and it harkens back to Amos ‘n’ Andy.” That insulted Tyler Perry and also made him very upset.
Tyler Perry sometimes takes Spike’s comments in good humor too. Perry said. “Let me tell you what Madea, Brown and all of these characters are bait. Disarming, charming make you laugh bait so that I can slap Madea in something and talk about God, love, faith, forgiveness, family any of those things you know.”
He added that he is that he’s “insulted” and “pissed off” by comments Lee made about his work last May.

Spike Lee is jealous of Tyler Perry. He’s(Spike)mad because his film making career hasn’t been as successful.

I think spike is right there is plenty of other characters that reprensent black people better than the characters that he uses. If you don’t Tyler perry movies as coonery go back and what old Amo and Andy movie. I bet you will see where Spike Lee is coming from.

Oh My Goodness! Spike Lee is so jealous. Tyler, your movies/plays are inspirational and continue to speak to viewers. God is definitely in your work. I know Spike pissed you off… me too. He’s right about one thing, African Americans will not support each other. It’s the crab mentality.
I am in a sorority, and I know for a fact the School Daze movie is not what black universities are about. I did not watch the entire movie, because it was degrading. Spike, get a life! Better yet, come back to life! Get to work! As the young folks say, “STOP HATING”!!!!!
I love you Tyler and look forward to your new works.

I just had to say something after reading the comments above. “Spike get real!” I have enjoyed Mr. Perry’s movies with a understanding of where Mr. Lee is coming from. Still I enjoy them with sence of how others might view African Americans because of them. We as Black people know that Mr. Perry is being real about some of the stuff we see. The thing that we must agree to is that there are people in every race that present a positive and a negative side of their people depending on who is looking. If we are afraid to admit that these people exsist then we will never come to accept ourselves or other people for who they are and love them as God does regardless of how we might want them to represent our races. White people have some Browns in their basement also. Mr. Perry keep being real and let God decide if Amos and Andy should be in your next movie. I’ll bet Spike laughed all through your last movie and then got jealous.

Who cares!!!! Shut Up Spike!!! The movies and the shows are hilarious! Tyler is funnier and probably richer than you. Your just a jeolous has been and he’s(Tyler) on top of his game like you wish you were! Tyler Perry..Do Not let what that idiot says insult or piss you off! Just keep doing what you do best. MADEA!!

Tyler, I love what you said about slipping god in once you get people laughing. If you are not able to make people comfortable with your presence, you will never be able to deliver a message. I hope Spike learn that one day. Keep doing what you do. Even people that don’t ordinarily go to church, receive positive words of wisdom from your work. I’ve seen every one of your plays.

People can relate when you keep it real. You can’t help a lost sinner, if you only party with the church people. You have found an effective means of getting the word out to the saved, non saved and fence stratlers. Don’t let any self centered, out of touch with reality, idiology distract you from what God has lead you to do. Press on brother.
