Spike Lee Says, “Gulf Report A Lie”

spik August 9, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The US administration’s report that the oil spill mess has been cleaned up by 75% is being met with open trepidation. The BP oil spillage is also said to have been plugged properly. However, Spike Lee still finds this hard to believe and has condemned it as total fabrication.

The director had been working on something quite different when the disaster struck. He changed his tracks to focus on the devastating effects that the oil had on the coastal metropolitan area. He had earlier been engaged in making a documentary in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and the re-building of New Orleans.

He completely pooh poohed the idea of 75% cleanup of the Gulf of Mexico area. It is highly ‘unlikely’ he stated while speaking to the Television Critics Association on Saturday.

He accused BP of buying the scientists stating that it was simply unbelievable that the biggest disaster in the world has been entirely cleaned up within the period. The oil did not disappear, he insisted putting the gulf report down rather strongly by terming it as a ‘lie’

Lee was there to promote his documentary titled ‘If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise’ which is expected to debut on August 23 and 24 on HBO. However, the promotion was overshadowed as he began his monologue on the oil spillage. He said that things did not work by magic and you just cannot clean up 75% of the spillage by simply chanting the magic words of ‘abracadabra’.

The energy advisor, Carol Browner said that the remaining 25% had not evaporated nor had it been taken care of either by men or by nature. Spike Lee reacted to the report adding that even if we assume the report to be correct, there are a total of 1.2 million barrels wrecking havoc on our coastlines still. That is, if we take the total oil spillage to be equal to 4.9 million barrels according to the official figures.
