Spanish singer honoured in Las Vegas
May 29th, 2011 - 1:31 pm ICT by IANSLos Angeles, May 29 (IANS/EFE) Spanish singer Camilo Sesto was awarded the “Outstanding Hispanic Award” Saturday in Las Vegas in recognition of his almost 50-year career.
The tribute was planned for Friday night but a delay in the artist’s flight from Puerto Rico forced the postponement of the award presentation until Saturday morning, said Pablo Castro, president of the Las Vegas International Press Association.
The singer will be 65 in September.
The performer of such hits as “Vivir Asi Es Morir de Amor” (Living Like This Is Dying of Love), “Algo de Mi” (Something of Myself) and “El Amor de Mi Vida” (Love of My Life) will join other famous artists from the Spanish-speaking world who have previously received this honour, including Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias, Juan Gabriel, Ricardo Arjona and Vicente Fernandez.
Granting this award to a prominent show business celebrity as Camilo Sesto - the first tribute he has received in Las Vegas - is a great honour for the city, Castro said.
The ceremony took place at the Planet Hollywood casino.
Castro said that the decision to award the prize to Camilo Sesto was taken unanimously by the organisation’s board of directors in answer to the singer’s many fans who in recent months have communicated by telephone and e-mail asking them to honour him in some way.
Calls came in from all over Latin America, according to Castro, who said that Camilo Sesto told the board through his representatives that he was proud, happy and grateful for the honour.
