Sony’s lucky disaster week

For Hollywood giants Sony/Columbia, this week has been one big disaster week. Two of its production ventures have hit the screens this Friday and, coincidentally, both are disaster films. Columbia’s 2012, which opened on 13th November to earth shattering record breaking collections, is about the beginning of the end of the world in December 2012. Whereas Sony has joined hands with the Bhatt to jointly produce Tum Mile, which, in a way, is a disaster film because it talks about a love story that happens during, the torrential and disastrous rains of 26th July 2005 in Mumbai.
Yet another coincidence is that in the week of release, many parts of India had un-seasonal rains with a fear of a cyclone hitting Mumbai on 11th Nov ember 2009. Of course, the cyclone finally did not hit Mumbai but the panic it created in the metropolis and all over the country was terrible. It almost seemed like Providence was with Sony/Columbia and was playing a trick for the promotion of the two films.
Now even though, the Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan starrer Tum Mile opened to bad reviews but it has still managed to had a fair weekend at the box office. This Kunal Deshmukh directed film has grossed an approximate of Rs 8 crore net over its first weekend.
The exact breakdown has been Rs. 2.50 crore on Friday, 2 crore on Saturday and 3.50 crore on Sunday. The film after a fairly good start on Friday could not really capitalize on Saturday and Sunday as both days had figures lower than they should have been. Overall the first week will probably see collections in the 11-12 crore region and could be an average runner if it can hang around at the theatres after its first week.
Considering the low cost in its making, the Bollywood trade insiders are confident that no one will lose money in this project and make a decent profit if not big.
