Washington, October 29 (ANI): Sir Ian Mckellen has revealed why he feels he can never get married - the actor believes it would be impossible for a gay man to tie the knot and have kids.

The 70-year-old star confessed wedding bells “never crossed” his mind despite the fact that same sex marriages were legal in his native Britain.

“That’s the scar that I and so many others bear - we believed ourselves to be second-rate citizens for so long, the idea of being able to say, ‘This is my husband, these are my children,’ was not an option,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling Details magazine.

Sir Ian, who played Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, further recalled what playwright Tom Stoppard said to him shortly after he ‘came out’ as a gay man at the age of 49.

He added: “(Stoppard said), ‘I feel so sorry for you, because you’ll never have children.’ These days I would say, ‘Well, why not, Tom?’ But 20 years ago I accepted his judgment.” (ANI)
