Los Angeles, June 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Country singer Willie Nelson escaped jail when he was ordered to pay a fine of $500 for possessing marijuana. TMZ reports that the judge has also assured Nelson that if he can stay out of trouble for the next 30 days, the entire case against him will be closed. The prosecution team reached a plea bargain deal with Nelson which made it possible for him to escape jail.

The fine is part of a plea bargain that saw the singer plead no contest to the charge of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Nelson was arrested at the later part of last year when a search in his tour bus yielded marijuana. When the police confronted him with the find, Nelson owned up to the drug and he was subsequently arrested and later charged. The initial charge was marijuana possession but after reaching a plea bargain with the prosecutors, the charge was reduced to misdemeanor.

After the trial, the attorney of Nelson expressed the gratitude of his client that the issue has finally been dealt with. During an interview with TMZ, lawyer Joe Turner described the whole process as being “very fair.”

He told the website that, “Willie is glad to have it all behind him. Everyone was very fair.”
