Singer Teddy Pendergrass Dies At 59

Teddy PendergrassJan 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Known as the reigning sex symbol of R&B in the 1970s, soul singer Teddy Pendergrass passed away at 59. He died on Wednesday in suburban Philadelphia’s Bryn Mawr Hospital. The singer attained huge popularity for his masculine and forceful voice. The passionate love ballads of the singer are remembered till date. He had a jest for life and even after suffering from a serious car accident which made him crippled, he did not withdraw into shell. Eight months back, the singer had to undergo a colon cancer surgery and faced difficulty in recovering from it. His son affirmed the news of his demise and said that his memory will live through his creation.

The singer met with a fatal car crash in 1982 and it made him paralyzed waist down. However, he did not give up his hopes after the incident. It made him spend almost six months in a bed ridden condition. However, he resumed recording the following year and released an album named Love language. In 1985 he made a comeback to the stage and performed from his Wheelchair. He later setup the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance to provide a helping hand to the victims of spinal cord injuries.

His solo songs established him as a leading black male singer of his time. There was an aggressive undertone in his voice which the music lovers took a liking to. His lyrics have a tone of sensuousness that is not coarse but seductive. He made women go crazy with his rich voice and the fans craved for his musical creations.
