May 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Simon Cowell, known as one of the judges from ‘American Idol’ and ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, as well as for his charity work, will receive a knighthood at the request of the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The title will, of course, make him ‘Sir Simon Cowell’.
Prime Minister Brown was very adamant about wanting Cowell to have the award- not for his musical work, but for his charity, especially the work Cowell put into the single ‘Everybody Hurts’ which raised money for the earthquake victims in Haiti. The single topped the charts, and raised a great deal for these people after the tragedy.
According to one source, “Gordon Brown was very keen for Simon to get proper recognition for his work. He was particularly impressed by the way Simon responded to his suggestion to release the record for Haiti by dropping everything to ensure it was a success. And there’s no doubt Simon has brought as great deal of happiness to millions of people with his music and TV shows.”
Television shows by Simon Cowell are watched in 27 countries, which has caused his popularity to soar. Simon himself, however, was most likely shocked at the news, since he has stated to “The Daily Mirror”, “I’d say my chances of being knighted were zero, in fact, below zero. But I never did all this to get a knighthood. I am very lucky to do what I do and feel privileged.”
It is very doubtful that he would turn it down, however, although it has been done before. The list of those who have turned knighthood down wither because they felt they did not deserve it or because they felt it was all silly include such people as Malcolm McDonnell, Yeats, Bowie, Ralph Vaughn Williams, and more.
