April 22, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): According to reports, Shekhar Kapur, Indian filmmaker of international acclaim, is gearing up to direct a film based on the life of English mountaineer, George Mallory. The film will be produced by Hollywood superstar Julia Roberts and director Kevin Townsend.
Mallory took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s. He disappeared along with his partner, Andrew Irvine, during their attempt to make the first ascent of the world’s highest mountain.
Mallory’s ultimate fate was unknown for 75 years, until his body was finally discovered in 1999 by an expedition that had set out to search for the climbers’ remains. It remains a subject of continuing research whether they reached the summit before they died.
Mallory is famously quoted as having replied to the question “Why do you want to climb Mount Everest?” with the retort: “Because it’s there”, which has been called “the most famous three words in mountaineering”.
The script of the film is written by Townsend and the team of Matthew Faulk and Mark Skeet and will be set in post World War I times. It will chronicle Mallory’s attempts to scale the Everest and the toll it takes on his marriage as the mountain becomes his obsession.
