This afternoon Gaffney was at home in Squaw Valley, with his brother, Robb, and also a close friend of McConkey’s, reeling from the news. “With what Shane does,” said Scott, “it’s a call you always picture getting at some point, but you realistically don’t ever expect it to happen.”
SHane McConkey. a base jumper and a big mountain skier was killed earlier today in a ski-BASE accident in the Italian Dolomites. Shane died in Italy while filming his current film. A friend of his Scott Gaffney said the following late today to local press:
“I was pretty much floored. Everyone is the same way. They’re floored. With what he does, you picture it happening at some point, and yet at the same time, you think it’s never going to happen. The bottom fell out today. He was a larger than life personality/ He was one of the most gifted individuals you’ll ever meet, and one hell of a friend who never let who he was in the media’s eyes change him.”
The cause of death is still undetermined and by some reports without confirmation claim equipment failure.
