haitiHaiti, Apr 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Colombian pop singer Shakira arrived at Haiti on Sunday, to pay a visit to the survivors of the devastating earthquake which had rocked the country earlier this year. Shakira arrived at the city of Port-au-Prince amidst cheering and greetings from fans, who now live in makeshift camps after their homes have been destroyed during the earthquake. More than 50,000 survivors now live on the golf course in Haiti which has been converted into camps for them.

Shakira was welcomed to the Caribbean island by actor Sean Penn, who is also in the country to extend help to the refugee camps. The two stars discussed at length about the plight of the survivors of the Haitian earthquake and the possible methods that could be applied to reduce them.

The Colombian pop star is associated with the ALAS foundation, that provides help to needy children across South America. She is also involved in charity work through her Barefoot foundation, that provides nutrition to hungry children in Colombia.

Shakira has joined the group of Hollywood celebrities who are working to raise funds for the January 12 earthquake victims. Landing at Port-au-Prince, the singer met more than 100 children victims and danced with them to her songs. Shakira has announced the establishment of the Barefoot Haiti School in Haiti to provide education to the homeless children, declaring that the school would be modeled on the other schools that her foundation runs in South America. Shakira feels that children need to be given education to impart to the progress of an economically ravaged country like Haiti.
