Being a medical student at Sacred Heart Medical Hospital is being compared to boot camp by Lucy one of the medical students at Sacred Heart. Referring to J.D. as the drill Sargent that carries the big stick. The interns J.D. and Chris Turk learn of a party for the med students and Dr. Cox informs them that it is a theme party so a cowboy or Indian costume must me worn to enter the party. With their wives out of town J.D and Turk arrive at the party only to discover it is not a costume party and Dr. Cox is waiting to take photos of the two for his viewing enjoyment. The party instead turns out to be a good bye party from Kelso for Ted and his girlfriend Gooch who are planning to travel to every state in the U.S. for which they wrote a quirky little song for each state.

The medical students learn to deal with a patient whose liver is failing and is refusing treatment. Lucy tells D r. Mahoney that the patient does not want to be bothered so they were done dealing with him and they were going home. Dr. Mahoney explains to them that patients are not on time schedule and that any decision the medical students make better be one they can live with. Face with the fact that they are there to help save lives, they find a way to help the patient. Finding the mans friends to help with his treatment is a lesson learned for the students knowing that treating the symptom is not the same as treating the patient.
