Oct 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) ‘60 Minutes’ correspondent Scott Pelley recently spent time with the most generous family in the world as a part of the ‘60 Minutes Overtime’ segment. The correspondent spent time with Melinda Gates at the Gates Foundation in Washington and also traveled to India where the Microsoft founder and his wife help provide vaccines and medication to millions of poor people. The editor of the show revealed that the objective was to get an insight into the family life of the Gates and understand the mindset of the couple who plan to give away $60 billion in charity.
Melinda Gates agreed to travel around the globe with the correspondent and show where the billions were going. Though the couple is known to be not to keen about their humanitarian efforts and charity work, ‘60 Minutes Overtime’ showcased the remarkable changes that the Gates family has been bringing about in the most neglected areas of the world. One of the places visited by Scott Pelley and Melinda Gates is a poor country side in Uttar Pradesh, India. Melinda Gates explained that the region not only has food scarcity but is also plagued by death and disease. She said that superstition has also caused the people to shun medicines which makes it all the more difficult for the people to come out of their situation. She told Scott Pelley that these were the kind of places where she and the Microsoft co-founder wanted to work exactly.
The Gates also revealed on the show that one of their objectives is to make the American kids the most educated in the world. They also added that reducing the death rate of young children in developing countries was also one of their primary foci.
