Sacha Baron Cohen Roped In To Play Freddie Mercury

sacha September 19, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is about to be reincarnated on the screen by the British comic Sacha Baron Cohen. The biopic based on the life and times of the flamboyant singer Mercury is set to be filmed next year. The ‘Queen’ had been a name to reckon with in the world of bands back in the 70s and 80s.

Hits like ‘We Are the Champions’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘We Will Rock You’ had helped ‘Queen’ to climb up the ladder of success. Mercury died due to complications arising from AIDs in 1991. He was aged 45.

Reports of Sacha Baron Cohen playing the legendary singer had first started circulating in 2007 but the representative of Cohen had dismissed it as rumor. G.K. Films is now going ahead with the project and has already confirmed the presence of the ‘Bruno’ star in its team. The scriptwriter for the ‘The Queen’ and ‘The Last King of Scotland’, Peter Morgan is expected o take on the music royalty.

Graham King of G.K. Films gave out a statement in which he stated that Mercury had been an awe inspiring performer with the ‘Queen’ being a music brand unto itself so great had been its success. He went on to add that they hope to tell the story behind it’s stupendous success with the help of Cohen who will play the star and Morgan’s scriptwriting abilities. The yet to be titled biopic will also get some help from the three surviving members of ‘Queen’

The music rights for the band’s sings have already been acquired as per the reports. However, it is still not sure whether Cohen will be singing the songs or the vocals of Mercury will be used in the film. The director of the biopic has not been finalized as yet.
