August 17, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The famous movie, ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is being remade with a relatively unknown actor being finalized for playing the lead role. Rooney Mara, 25 will be seen essaying the role of Lisbeth Salander, the investigator. Lisbeth Salander is shown to have a troubled childhood in the crime thriller which is being remade in English.

She will also get Daniel Craig, the James Bond actor, as her partner in the movie. Craig plays a journalist who teams up with Salander in order to investigate the disappearance of another character.

The film is based on the first of the popular series by Stieg Larsson. The Swedish version of the film was also released last year. Larsson could not see his Millennium trilogy being published as he died a year before it came out in print.

The final declaration of Mara being chosen to play the coveted role came after much speculation. She was selected over Scarlet Johansson, Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan as well as other big names who were reportedly in the fray.

Rooney Mara has featured in the remake of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ which had been her biggest role so far. She was also seen in a few Television serials like ‘ER’ and ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’. Sources hint at Mara having an option of playing the same character in the next two books of the same series too. ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’ and ‘The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest’ are the equally popular second and final thrillers of the trilogy respectively.

The English version of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ is expected to begin shooting next month onwards and will hit the screens sometime in December next year. David Fincher will be directing the new version of the film while Steve Zaillian has been roped in to write the screen play of the movie.
