May 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Valerie Bertinelli turned 50 last month, and as if that weren’t big enough news, she also became engaged to businessman Tom Vitale, whom she has been dating for the last six years.

The 48 year old Vitale decided to propose while he and Valerie were sharing a romantic evening together in Florence, Italy. The stars and moonlight combined to make a wonderful time for amore’, and so Vitale popped the question. “If the time wasn’t right, I wouldn’t have asked,” Vitale says. “We’re both still a little afraid of commitment, but then we were over there, and it was like our souls were calibrated.” Valerie was very surprised at the proposal. “We’d talked about getting married, but I was still shocked. It was sweet when he asked me, because he was so scared. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ” she stated to ‘AARP The Magazine.”

The couple met in 2004, with both of them coming from previous marriages. Valeris herself was marred for 25 years to rocker “Eddie Van Halen” and they share a 19 year old son, Wolfgang. Vitale has four kids ranging in age from 11 and 19. Valerie has recently lost 40 pounds after becoming a spokesperson for ‘Jenny Craig’, but says that her weight was never an issue in the relationship. “I’ve never felt more beautiful at any weight than when Tom looks at me,” Valerie shared. “He loved me no matter what. In his way, he’s teaching me to love myself just as I am.”
