8781 April 23, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): After the triumph of his most recent film, Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. has another reason to have a good time. Downey Jr. is purportedly enacting the lead in the prequel to Wizard of Oz in a new film titled Oz the Great and Powerful.

Downey Jr. made his screen debut at the age of five when he came into view in one of the films of his father, Robert Downey Sr. The prequel to Wizard of Oz will be the most recent addition to the lengthy catalog of highly praised roles such as those of the US Marshal and The Singing Detective that Downey Jr. has portrayed in past.

Academy award winner, director Sam Mendes, is in negotiations to direct the project. However, some reports have also indicated that ‘Hairspray” director, Adam Shankman, could get to direct the film. The script of the film has been inscribed by screenwriter, Mitchell Kapner.

The original Wizard of Oz that came in 1939 rotated around the tale of a young circus juggler, who finishes up as the sovereign of the magical country after crash-landing there in a hot air balloon. It was directed by Victor Fleming and was on based on the 1900 children’s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum.
