Rob Marshall circles ‘Pirates’

Aug 3, (IBNS) Disney in talks with Rob Marshall to direct the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. The move is likely to put the film back on track for a 2010 start with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Variety.com reported that though Marshall’s involvement in the film was not confirmed but it was agood sign that the studio has started to think of the fourth movie of the series. It has also begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture.

Gore Verbinski was at the helm in the first three films in the series but stepped away from the fourth to focus on on a movie version of the video game “BioShock” for Universal. That film’s momentum has been put on hold for quiet some time but Verbinski has moved on to other directing and producing projects.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney are meeting regularly to make the fourth sequel of the Pirates and have Depp star in it before he does “The Lone Ranger” for them.

The “Pirates” series is big business for Disney, as the first three pics grossed $2.6 billion worldwide.

Marshall’s name as a prospective helmer of the fourth pic surprised some in the industry. The choreographer-turned-director made his debut with the Oscar-winning musical “Chicago” and then followed with “Memoirs of a Geisha,” that underperformed at the box office.
