October 11, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Don’t let the title of this week’s ‘Smallville’ episode mislead you. Although Kara did return to Metropolis and put her powers on display for the world to see, the episode did not primarily revolve around her. The episode was actually about Clark and how Kara’s actions forced him to face himself once again. Kara’s unexpected arrival brought some of the longstanding issues back into Clark’s mind.

Clark has been putting his feelings of self-doubt and insecurity in the backburner for quite some time now and this was the episode where we got an insight into Clark’s inability to fly.  It seems that Clark’s upbringing among human beings instilled a strong sense of honor and morality in his mind but it might have stopped him from realizing his true potential.

On the other hand, Kara was born and brought up in Krypton before being sent on earth, as Clark’s protector, so she was never constrained by the human emotions. Kara’s personality largely reflects her ancestry. She has no palpable connection with human beings and does not consider herself the savior of this earth. Since Darkseid preys on self-doubt and low confidence, Jor-El asked Kara to take up the mantle, originally destined for Clark. Clark is the prime-target for Darkseid and it seems that Kara will have to protect him from being controlled by Darkseid.

So it seems that Clark’s self-doubt is the reason why Kara has to stick around. But with less than twenty episodes left, Clark have to soon come in terms with his doubts.
