Resident Evil sequel is a blockbuster hit
September 13th, 2010 - 8:29 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattSep 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The fourth movie in the zombie franchise, “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” was the highest selling movie in the global box office for its debut weekend even though the total sales in the North American region slumped to the lowest since 2008. The movie features Milla Jovovich.
According to the movie’s distributor Screen Gems, the movie sold $73.2 million and $27.7 million out of it came from Canada and the US, where it was biggest movie launched in the period.
The “Afterlife” generated $45.5 million from 29 countries around the world outside North America. It topped the charts in most of those countries such as Japan ($15.5 million), Russia ($9.5 million), Spain ($3.4 million) and UK ($2.9 million).
The current sales figures are an improvement on the previous movie, “Extinction” which was released in 2008. The videogame-derived movie earned $23.7 million in its first weekend in North America and $17.4 million in the 29 other countries worldwide. The Extinction totaled $146 million in sales.
The Afterlife is written and directed by Milla Jovovich’s husband Paul Anderson and it costed around $52 million to produce the movie.
