London, July 18 (IANS) Rebekah Brooks, the former head of British newspaper publisher News International, was released on bail early Monday following her arrest over phone-hacking allegations, Xinhua reported.

The 43-year-old former chief executive officer went to a London police station by appointment Sunday, and was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and corruption allegations.

Brooks was an editor of News of the World newspaper during 2002-2003 when it allegedly hacked up to 4,000 phones, including that of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler.

She resigned Friday over the hacking scandal, leading to the closure of the best-selling Sunday tabloid, which was attached to News International, owned by American media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
