London, Jan 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A production house has come under fire in the United Kingdom for naming two ugly sisters as Beatrice and Eugenie. In a Cinderella production playing at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, the producers chose the names of the daughters of the Duke of York for the two ugly sisters in the play.

A Canterbury City Council member Bob Britnell told the press that, “Looking at their photos, they don’t seem ugly, just two pretty, ordinary girls who get on with their lives without courting celebrity, so why mock them? Sadly there are plenty of people out there willing to mock others for no good reason. What a shame our pantomime has added to them. Shame on the producers and shame on the theatre for not intervening.”

Critics have called the naming of the characters after the sisters as “cheap joke” with some prominent personalities saying they will stay out of the theater as a protest.

Show writer Paul Hendy has defended the production saying those criticizing it are doing so out of ignorance. Hendy insists that the production never made fun of any member of the royal family in the production.
