London, Feb 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Britain’s Prince Williams is all set to become the 5th President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, which is better known as BAFTA. Prince William is going to succeed the legendary director Lord Attenborough. David Parfitt, chairman of Bafta, said that, “The Academy has had a long association with the Royal Family and we are absolutely delighted that Prince William has agreed to become our President. Our outgoing President, Lord Attenborough, who has been the most extraordinary supporter of the Academy, extended the invitation to Prince William himself and he is as thrilled as I am that he accepted.”
After becoming the President of the BAFTA, in his first official act, Prince Williams will present the legendary actress Vanessa Redgrave with the Academy fellowship. It ought to be mentioned that the Academy Fellowship is the highest honor that the British Academy bestows on someone for “outstanding and exceptional” contribution to film. Its past recipients include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, and last year’s recipient, Terry Gilliam.
There has been quite a ‘royal connection’ with the BAFTA, for the royal family. As the first President of BAFTA was the Duke of Edinburg in 1959. Then in 1972, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh donated a part of the royalties from the film “The Royal Family” to Bafta’s new headquarters in London.
