Jan 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) ‘Lord of the Rings’ director, Sir Peter Jackson recently underwent surgery to repair a perforated ulcer in his home of New Zealand after suffering from a very serious stomach ache the night before. These types of ulcers can be very dangerous, and occur when when the patient has an ulcer which eats through the lining of the stomach or the small intestine.

If the ulcer manages to break through the lining, acids in the stomach could leak into the abdominal cavity, which could be life threatening. This is the reason why most doctors will rush a patient with a perforated ulcer right into surgery. For most other types of ulcers, simple treatment with antibiotics and antacids is successful.

Sir Peter Jackson is said to be recovering well, although filming for the Lord of the Rings sequel, ‘The Hobbit’ has been delayed.
