Los Angeles, Nov 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) PETA is criticizing Mario for wearing tanooki! The game character returns in Super Mario 3D Land wearing tanooki.

PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – issued a statement saying Mario was irresponsible to wear tanooki on his mission to rescue the princess. Nintendo, the makers of the iconic game, was attacked for encouraging wearing of tanooki.

PETA’s statement said that, “When on a mission to rescue the princess, Mario has been known to use whatever means necessary to defeat his enemy — even wearing the skin of a raccoon dog to give him special powers. Tanooki may be just a suit in the game, but in real life tanuki are raccoon dogs who are skinned alive for their fur. By wearing a Tanooki, Mario is sending the message that it is OK to wear fur.”

To stress their point, PETA issued the statement with Mario holding the head of a dead dog and a bloody fur. The organization also uploaded a video on its website which showed how actual tanookis are extracted from the skin of the tanuki dog. The video is a very disturbing one which will no doubt create the awareness to how the fur is made.

PETA is involved in fighting against animal cruelty and they are credited with creating awareness to several cruel treatments of animals.
