Peruvian film Milk of Sorrow bags Berlin Golden Bear AwardFebruary 15th, 2009 - 5:41 pm ICT by ANI
London, Feb 15 (ANI): Peruvian film The Milk of Sorrow has bagged the prestigious Golden Bear award for best picture at this years Berlin Film Festival.
Directed by Claudia Llosa, the film chronicles the story of a young woman who was born to a woman who was raped in the 1980s.
As the first Peruvian entry in the festival’’s main competition, the film beat hotly-tipped The Messenger, starring Woody Harrelson, and My One and Only, with Renee Zellweger.
Uruguays Gigante and Germanys Everyone Else shared the gong for the runner-up.
“This is beautiful… this is such an honour. This is for Peru. This is for our country,” the BBC quoted Llosa as saying upon receiving the award.
The Messenger won the Silver Bear for best script for writers Oren Moverman and Alessandro Camon, and also bagged the award for best script
Sotigui Kouyate from Mali won the best actor Silver Bear for his role in London River, while the best director Silver Bear went to Iranian Asghar Farhadi for About Elly.
The Berlin Film Festival is in its 59th year, and is popular for its reputation of picking out future hit films. (ANI)
