Pedro-Zamora to Appear at Miami FestivalMarch 13th, 2009 - 12:29 am ICT by GD
Pedro Zamora was openly gay and HIV-positive, and was the face of the AIDS breakout in the 90s. He died at the age of 22, changing the way many in and outside the gay community perceived things. A bio-pic called “Pedro” about the life and times of this Pedro Zamora is about to be premiered at The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Written by recent Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk), the film will premiere on 8 pm Sunday, March 22, at the Colony Theatre in South Beach, Miami.
Alex Loynaz, from Miami will play Pedro, who got instant fame when he was roped in for the reality show “The Real World: San Francisco” on MTV. After the show Pedro Zamora went on to work for raising awareness and educating people about AIDS and HIV.
He even testified before the Congress about the need for more educational programs to raise awareness among the youth. His attempt to humanize people with AIDS was highly commended by the erstwhile President Bill Clinton. The film “Pedro” is about
Zamora’s relationship with his Cuban family, his partner Sean and his friendship with some cast members of “”The Real World: San Francisco”. The film also stars Justina Machado from “Six Feet Under”.
The cast of the “Pedro” as well as Pedro Zamora’s family will be present at the screening. After the film is presented at the festival, MTV has the rights to air it on their networks and a first screening on LOGO is expected. DVDs of the film would be out in summer.
