PCB denies threatening Cricket AustraliaSeptember 17th, 2008 - 1:38 pm ICT by ANI
Melbourne, Sept.17 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board has denied making legal threats to Cricket Australia over its proposed move to tour India after a spate of bombings, just months after failing to tour Pakistan due to security concerns.
A report in Pakistan’’s largest English-language newspaper The News said the board was considering a lawsuit against Cricket Australia over the supposed double standards it would demonstrate by opting to tour India, and not Pakistan, in the wake of terrorist attacks.
Earlier, a senior PCB official called the Aussies cowards for twice refusing to play in Pakistan citing security reasons and for now deciding to go ahead with their India tour despite Saturdays blasts in New Delhi.
The unidentified official said the Cricket Australia (CA) had double standards when it comes to playing cricket in Pakistan or India, and that it could not afford to refuse to play in India as it would have meant huge losses to them (Aussies).
To talk simply of double standards would be to understate what we feel. My personal view is that your people are a bunch of lily-livered cowards who use one set of rules when it comes to poor Pakistan and another when it comes to India and the rich pickings to be made from the Board of Control for Cricket in India and playing in the Indian Premier League, Fox Sports quoted the unidentified PCB official as saying.
PCB top brass is said to be viewing Australia as Pakistan cricket’’s No.1 enemy.
The PCBs Chief Operating Officer, Shafqat Naghmi, reportedly said: I think if Australia tour India it will only highlight their double standards on security issues. Pakistan is as safe as India and we have even promised state level security for the teams.
This incident only shows the double standards of Australian cricket. Terrorist attacks can take place anywhere, we have said constantly. No country is safer than the other and this point was highlighted after the unfortunate and sad incidents in Delhi. We find it hard to comprehend that when Australian cricketers can tour a country (India) which has had a succession of bomb attacks; what is so different about coming to Pakistan?, he added.
Australia is due to leave for India on Sunday and one commentator said there is simply too much money involved when it comes to India to take such a decision (to scrap the tour). (ANI)
