Paul McCartney To Be Honored At White House With Gershwin Prize

May 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Rock star legend, and former ‘Beatles’ member, Paul McCartney will be honored at a White House concert which will be hosted by President Barack Obama and his First Lady, Michelle. The president will be presenting McCartney with this year’s Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which is the highest honor that a pop star can achieve.

The reception, will will be held on June 2 and will air on PBS on July 28 at 8 pm, is called, “In Performance at the White House Celebrating the Music of Paul McCartney: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize.” The Gershwin Prize, which is given by the Library of Congress, was won last year by Stevie Wonder. President Obama presented the award at that time as well. According to word from the White House, “The prize commemorates George and Ira Gershwin, the legendary American songwriting team whose extensive manuscript collections reside in the Library of Congress, it is awarded to musicians whose lifetime contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with the Gershwins.”

The concert event will have all star performances from such names as ‘Jack White’, ‘Faith Hill’, ‘Elvis Costello’, the ‘Jonas Brothers’, ‘Emmylou Harris’, ‘Dave Grohl’. This award was created in 2007, and McCartney will be it’s 3rd recipient. In the meantime, McCartney is still on tour and will be in Mexico City on May 27 and 28.
