It was a bigger achievement for this star because he surpassed Johnny Depp in this category, who was nominated twice- First, for his strong role in “Alice In Wonderland” and second, for his role in “The Tourist”. Both these films by Johnny Depp made a bigger impact in the box office than “Barney’s Version”. Therefore winning this award, came up as a surprise, not only to the actor, but also to the audiences.

Paul Giamatti did not expect to win this award, as he had to compete twice with this very popular and established Captain Jack Sparrow. However, as he went up on the stage, he said that if he had the authority to decide who deserves this award, he would have given it to Johnny Depp. He thinks he is a “very good looking guy”. However, it seems he was in a flirtatious mood on the stage. When he was asked to comment on Halle Berry, who presented him with this award, he replied that even if she wears a “Hefty Cinch Sack”, she would end up looking good. His opinion on host Ricky Gervais was, “a darkly funny, mordantly funny and a bit nasty”. However, he still finds him great.

His role in “Barney’s Version” was is considered to be one of his best performances according too the critics. Although the film did not get an overwhelming response, as compared to the other block busters of the year, Paul Giamatti’s character, Barney Panofsky, was well appreciated by all. Sources feel that the way he colored the neurotic TV producer, with immense love for his third wife, had a very strong appeal on the screen, that made him deserving for this award.
