May 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) After paving the way for a whole slew of new crime dramas, the one and only original, Law & Order, will be canceled this season. Law and Order is said to have jump started an era of television production in New York City. Now the show is coming to it’s end.

Just on the verge of beating Gunsmoke to take the place as the longest running series on television, Law and Order stopped short to tie with the western. In a press release today, NBC confirmed that the last show for the original Law and Order will air on May 24. Although the actors and producers of the show were told Thursday that it had been canceled, the executive producer, Dick Wolf had remained in conversations with NBC through the evening hoping to make a deal for the 21st season. Apparently no deal was made by NBC, however, since they announced the ending of the show on Friday.

NBC has, however, decided to start yet another new ’spin-off’ series called Law and Order:Los Angeles, and renewed an old spin-off, Law and Order Special Victims Unit for another season. The official schedule for NBC will be announced on Monday in New York.

Law and Order has a ‘ripped from the headlines’ approach to crime drama, and has opened the doors to many more police shows which are nothing like their predecessors. In a world where Hillstreet Blues, and Starsky and Hutch once ruled the airways, we now have Criminal Minds, CSI (and all of the spin-offs), NCIS, Bones, and more. Many of these ‘crime dramas’ got their start after Law and Order got the world hooked. Kerry McCluggage, who was the president of Universal TV when Law & Order premiered in 1990, said the series had “influenced all the procedural dramas that have come in its wake.”

NBC stated that the new Law and Order:Los Angeles would keep much of the themes and story lines as the canceled version, and fans will definitely flock to it. “There are certainly plenty of stories to tell, and there’s a very loyal audience that has spanned across franchises,” he said. Law & Order had its premiere in September 1990. A total of 456 episodes have been produced.
