Oprah It’s been an unpleasant week for celebrity pets. After the death of Martha Stewart’s chow puppy, Oprah’s puppy Ivan has also departed due to the deadly parvovirus. Parvovirus is an extremely contagious disease diagnosed in puppies and adolescent dogs.

Oprah’s two pups Ivan and Sadie were part of an 11 puppy litter born on December 15, 2008. Sadie and Ivan were adopted by Oprah earlier this month from PAWS Chicago. A few days later Ivan started developing symptoms of parvovirus and subsequently died. Littermate Sadie was also infected and is currently undergoing treatment at a suburban veterinary clinic.

Oprah’s puppy owning spree had led to further controversy when the “American sporting dog alliance” alleged foul play in the adoption of the pups. Oprah had famously displayed her pups on the 6th March on the Oprah Winfrey show and had mentioned that she was deliberating on adopting one of Sadie’s brothers. She stated “I am going to have to decide today whether I am going to take another one. If I don’t decide today, these dogs will be gone in an instant.”

It is learnt that parvovirus is transmitted through fecal matter and vomit from infected dogs. Often owners are unaware that their pets are infected until symptoms such as blood vomiting and diarrhea are noticed. Incase the pets are treated early close to 80% survive this viral attack.

Oprah did take a humane step in adopting these pups, but this gesture had a sad end. Hope Sadie survives and this will be the silver lining on the other wise dark grey clouds.
