Oldest Soap Opera to end

On Thursday, the Variety reported that the US Television network has decided to pull the curtain on ‘Guiding Light,’ a daytime drama that started on the radio before it moved to television in 1952.

‘Guiding Light’ will stop production in September, Variety said. Back in the radio days, detergent companies often sponsored the broadcasts, hence the term ’soap opera.’

With less-than-glowing ratings, ‘Guiding Light’ - born on the radio back in 1937 - will finish its long run with more than 16,000 episodes filmed.

Daytime dramas are fabled for their romances and betrayals, weddings and divorces, previously unknown evil twins, and in recent years, same-sex affection, lately serving as sort of a social barometer in the United States.
