`Nobody better than Banderas to depict passion’
August 12th, 2011 - 11:55 am ICT by IANSParis, Aug 12 (IANS/EFE) Acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar said that “there’s nobody better” than countryman Antonio Banderas for depicting passion and desire in films.
The two men first worked together 21 years ago, on Almodovar’s “Atame”.
In an interview published by the French weekly magazine Paris Match, Almodovar said that he had been having “nostalgia for Antonio” and confessed to having felt “delighted” when Banderas accepted the main role in his latest work, “La piel que habito”, which will begin showing in Spanish theaters Sep 2.
“When I finished writing the script, I thought about Antonio and I felt that he would be ready to come back to film with me in Spain. There’s nobody like him for embodying passion and desire,” Almodovar emphasized to the magazine.
With the same sincerity, he also acknowledged that, as a director, he is “obsessive and meticulous about the details” to the point of being “a nightmare for the team”.
When asked whether his films are a type of self-portrait, Almodovar said that he “protects” himself much more than other well-known directors such as the late Ingmar Bergman and John Cassavetes, but he added that “creativity is more exciting the more connected I am with reality”.
