‘No Angels’ pop star Nadja Benaissa could be jailed for 10 years for hiding her HIV status
August 26th, 2010 - 1:32 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattBerlin, Aug 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Prosecutors in Germany say they do not want the HIV positive artist who intentionally infected her former partner to be jailed for the crime.
Instead, prosecutors in Germany say that ‘No Angels’ pop star Nadja Benaissa should be given a suspended two-year sentence for the offense.
Twenty-eight year old Nadja Benaissa admitted in court that she had an unprotected sex with her former partner though she knew her HIV+ status. But she maintained throughout the trial that she never intentionally infected anyone with the disease. Though Nadja is aware of her HIV+ status since 1999, she says she has kept it a secret because she is scared of the effect it will have on her career. She later admitted that her action was a “cowardly act”
The court has heard the closing arguments from both the prosecutors and the defense team and they are expected to rule on the issue on Thursday. Nadja, who is a member of the German band group No Angels could spend up to 10 years in jail for the offense. She was arrested in Frankfurt last year and she spent 10 days in police custody after the arrest.
Nadja was accused of intentionally infecting her former partner and at least two others with HIV. She has been charged with causing bodily harm to those she had unprotected sex with though she is aware she is HIV+.
