Kenny Wormald gets the role after Zac Efron and Chace Crawford backed out of the project. The iconic role of Ren McCormack will be played by the relatively unknown reality contestant of MTV’s ‘Dancelife’ after being selected from the worldwide auditions.

The remake will be directed by Craig Brewer of ‘Hustle and Flow’ fame. It will star Dennis Quaid as Reverend Moore and also the previously announced Julianne Hough of ‘Dancing With The Stars’ fame as Ariel. The producer who was also part of the previous project in 1984 said that he always wanted to work with Craig Brewer ever since he saw the film ‘Hustle and Flow’.

He believes that Craig Brewer has the capability to bring in a whole new generation of movie goers with his fresh and contemporary vision and technique. Craig Brewer stated that he saw ‘Footloose’ when he was 13 years old and it rocked his world.

He said that the film showed the struggles of faith and family in small towns and also had an very good soundtrack. He promised the fans that he will stick to the spirit of the original film but he will have to put in his Southern grit into the project.

The flick is slated to release on April 1, 2011.
