Neil Diamonds Sweet Caroline was JFKs daughterNovember 21st, 2007 - 12:32 pm ICT by admin
London, Nov 21 (ANI): For decades, fans have been kept guessing who the inspiration behind Neil Diamonds hit song Sweet Caroline was. Now, the legendary singer has opened up and revealed that she is none other than President John F Kennedys daughter Caroline.
The 66-year old singer/songwriter unmasked his muse when he performed the song via satellite for Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg at her 50th birthday party last week.
As for the reason he had not told anyone, well that was because he first wanted to tell the lady in question herself.
“I’ve never discussed it with anybody before intentionally. I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her some day,” the Telegraph quoted him, as saying.
Diamond composed the song in 1969, and revealed that Mrs Kennedy Schlossberg had been delighted by the news, though a little stunned.
“I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy,” he said.
Diamond also revealed how he had been a “young, broke songwriter” when he saw a photograph of the JFKs daughter in a magazine.
“It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony. It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there,” he said.
Years later, holed up in Memphis hotel, he penned the words and music in less an hour.
“It was a No 1 record and probably is the biggest, most important song of my career,” he said. (ANI)
